The process is slightly easier for Bedrock edition players, who merely have to enable the experimental features toggle, which can be found and activated in either the "create new world" or "edit world" game settings. Java edition players should note that this game version is not compatible with Minecraft's previous experimental snapshots and that a new world will need to be created. Once a new game has been started, the remaining files will be downloaded. From there, users should go into the Minecraft launcher and create a new installation, selecting the pending 1.18 experimental snapshot file as their game version. Once the file has been downloaded, it should be unpacked into the "versions" folder of the local Minecraft application data folder.
